Whiplash Reform Back on the Agenda

Advocacy Manager Peter Blackmore notes The Queen’s speech to Parliament on 21 June 2017 included the introduction of legislation to reduce motor insurance premiums. It is understood that the Civil Liability Bill will introduce a similar system of fixed damages to compensate those who suffer whiplash injuries to those contained in the Prisons and Courts Bill, which failed to proceed as a result of Parliament being dissolved early for the General Election.

The planned reforms, which will reduce the amount of compensation payable to those who suffer whiplash injuries in car accidents, have been criticised by many, including the shadow justice secretary, Richard Burgon, as being unnecessary, but have been welcomed by the insurance industry which estimates that, on average, annual car insurance premiums will be reduced by £35 as a result.
