Mortgage Repossession Claims Increasing

The Ministry of Justice’s quarterly figures show an increase of 17% increase in mortgage repossession claims in the period April 2017 to June 2017 compared to the year before. Although the increase is significant, the total number of mortgage possession claims issued in the last quarter (5,186) remains less than a fifth of the peak, in the second quarter of 2009, when 26,419 claims were issued.

The total number of possession orders in the last quarter also increased by 8%, although there was a slight reduction in the number of warrants issued and actual repossessions; as these events usually occur some time after possession orders are made, it is expected that they will also increase in the future.
